Oricoco cocopeat and fibre products are produced from aged matured brown coconut husks. Matured husks are stored in the factory’s significant husk storage yard for up to 6 months before it is further processed.
Cocopeat Products
Processing involves a number of processes, depending on the type of product required and Oricoco’s facilities are running multiple product lines at any one time.
In our first stage process to create Oricoco Coarse, the coconut husks are either decorticated or beaten to separate the fibres and the cocopeat or the husks are chopped into small pieces.
The second stage involves extensive and prolonged fresh water washing. Prolonged fresh water washing is integral to the process as it removes all salts and radical ions. Very low EC levels are subsequently achieved and our management via our laboratory facility ensures that the EC levels are maintained on a low base.

In the third stage the product is mechanically dried and sterilized. Mechanical drying and sterilization prevents any contamination from weeds, pathogenic germs, seeds, plants and other foreign matter. During this stage the fine dust particles are also removed.

Once the product reaches the required moisture content it is then compressed into blocks, planks, briquettes or bales.
These standardised procedures employed with all products ensure that there are no quality variations in the final product. This in turn ensures that Oricoco cocopeat is a consistent and completely homogenous growing medium.
Coco Fibre Products
The fibre that we remove from the husk is used for various applications.
The long, cleaned strands of fibre are used for mattress, brush, rope, twine and brush production. The shorter fibres are used for erosion control products, coir pots, hydroponic growing mediums and animal bedding.
Depending on the product and client requirements, Oricoco coco fibres are mechanical dried in order to ensure very low moisture content levels and to ensure a completely homogonous product.
Coco fibres are also increasingly used in hydroponic applications. Coco fibres improve the capillary action of the growing medium and we mix in certain quantities with cocopeat for those clients who require such a product.
